ok, so about a month ago i started looking for an mp3 player. the ipods look nice but i figured i could find something better for the price. i finally settled on the new samsung "napster" hd player and mostly liked it, but finally returned it 'cause it had major issues syncing with my pc - if the connection was made 10% of the time i was lucky!

then i started noticing all of these spiffy media devices that have color screens and play pictures and video. cool! i tried the iriver pmp-120 but wasn't impressed. the ui was ackward and lacked several key features, like the ability to run a slide show of your pictures. only plus was the very cool feature of being able to act as a usb host - plug in your digicam and download the pix. anyway, back it went.

next up is the creative portable media center. this devices seems to get the important things right - great ui, nice big screen, easy to use and it works well. sadly it is kind of big, and i'm not crazy about being forced to use wmp10 as the only way to get data to the device (tho i will say that syncing and adding content has been very easy).

now as i surf more i see more and more about the archos devices. this look pretty darn cool - more flexible download capabilities (just another removable device), more flexible media formats (i can load my pictures full-res if i want, then play with zoom and pan on the device), plus a built-in cf slot. seems like they thought of everything. i'm really tempted ... but i can't find 'em local. so if i buy it and don't like it i get to hassle with a return thru the mail and waste some bucks on shipping. also, there is the burning question of which archos - the av400 for a nice big screen but a bulky unit, or the gmini 400 for an awesome form factor and a great price ($330) but a pretty small screen. finally, neither unit has a great way to stand it up - actually kind of important to me since a major use will be watching tv shows while i pump away on the stairmaster/stationary bike/treadmill. i really don't want to have to hold the darn thing for an hour while i'm working out. so this is a major plus for the creative device.

anybody out there with hands-on experience, i'd love to hear your thoughts.

thanks,

joe

oh, and there's one more wrench in the works - i already own a pocket pc phone - does anyone know if these can play videos? if so it'd probably be smarter to just by a 1gb sd card and use that.

i have the previous generation, the 320. i haven't held the newer 400 series but i know relative the the 320 the 400 is slimmer and more compact , has a removable battery and uses mpg4 so the resolution is dvd quality. archos tends to break open a new market and then the guys with the big bucks swoop in and take the market and credit away from archos (as apple did with the ipod).

Go to walmart, pick up an RCA 128mb lyra (only $39.99 after rebate), which is half the size of a deck of cards and smaller than most cell phones. Need more space? It takes SD cards, pop in a 256mb card for more music.

This is the only mp3 player I need, perfect for workouts at the gym.:)

I'm still building my Media Center PC and when I'm done I will own a PMC (My goal from the beginning). You can buy Windows XP MCE 2005 from Newegg and Directron now. I got a PVR250 with hardware MPEG2 encoding from CompUSA for $79 after rebate (Though Newegg's PVR250-MCE adds an FM tuner and a different suite of inputs, it cost much more and lacks the remote). The cost of a Media Center PC in addition to a PMC makes this seem ridiculously high for just a PMC, but I haven't watched TV in almost a year and I NEED one! Hell, I only saw the first season of Star Trek Enterprise and I had to download all but the premier on P2P. Now I don't even have time for that. A lone PVR doesn't help because I work 7 days a week, 10.5 - 12hr shifts. This, a Portable Media Center, will come in so handy on my weekend security job and breaks at my other jobs, though I'll have to keep working them for so much longer to afford them!

I have the creative zen, and i love it. I looked at it and the samsung, the samsung being more square with a slightly smaller screen. I went ahead and got the zen. Syncing is not bad, and if you use MCE or Btv 3.4 or 3.5 it's a snap to get movies and tv onto it.
The screen isn't perfect, blacks could be darker, and if you have flashing light or fast changes in color (and i mean fast) it can be blocky, but i've loaded 7 movies on it and a little over 300 songs, and i amvery happy with it. It is replacing my 1st gen ipod. And once youget used to it, it's not that big.

The functionality of synchronizing with a PVR makes a portable media playing device like the PMC line much more useful than traditional portable video devices. So consider a PMC if you want to watch TV on break. Do any other non-PMC portable media players sync with PVR software?
