I'm looking to mess around with a personal web server of sorts and was wondering which software platform y'all might suggest. I also am looking to set up a forum on it as well, and think I will be going with Invision Power Board. I guess heres the breakdown of my choices:

I'm at a tossup between Windows and Linux, first off. Before I open up a can of worms, let me explain. My job is administering a Win2000 server network, and also doing web programming with ASP and SQL Server. So I feel more comfortable using that setup. Plus, I have access to Windows Server 2003 through an academic license now, and I'd kinda like to set things up on that just to get to know it. That being said, I'd also like to play with Linux and get to know that better, too. I'm looking between Red Hat and FreeBSD for web server options, and both seem to work well. We use RH as our mail server at work, and I've seen FBSD in action as a web server for a class project.

Since the invision board uses MySQL, that makes me sort of want to do the linux option, but I'd be able to put PHP and MySQL on windows and then be able to still do ASP work without the hassles of getting it to work on Apache - that is, if ASP will work with MySQL (I assume it does?) OR, I guess I could run a windows server with SQL Server and MySQL on it at the same time, but that seems like overkill. Hardware-wise it'd probably be more doable to run things on Linux than windows. I guess I'm looking for suggestions - whats the best combo to play around with all this stuff? Thanks!

My personal recommendation (biased, though, because I use something similar) would be RH + MySQL + PHP. It's free and easy. :)

I use debian + PHP + MySQL, and love it. It runs very nicely, and has yet to really run into any problems with anything I've thrown at it.
