this printer will be used solely for photo printing. i don't really care about features or speed. mostly just quality and cost

i'm leaning towards canon:

Canon PIXMA iP4200 9992A001 29 ppm(approx. 2.1 seconds per page) 9600 x 2400 dpi InkJet Photo Color Printer - Retail $109.99

Canon PIXMA IP6000D 9315A001 4800 x 1200 dpi InkJet Photo Color Printer - Retail $129.95

Canon IP6210D 0012B001 12 ppm 4800 x 1200 dpi InkJet Photo Color Printer - Retail $59.99

Canon iP6220D 0011B001 4800 x 1200 dpi InkJet Photo Color Printer - Retail $130.95

Canon iP6600D 0010B001 9600 x 2400 dpi InkJet Photo Color Printer - Retail $177.95

To her34,

You listed some good Canons-----but if you are concerned about cost and are looking to cut those costs
by using non-oem cartridges, you may wish to avoid the newest Canon's with their chipped cartridges.

So look to the previous generation of photoprinters that use the BCI-3&6 cartriges. Or in terms of dedicated phooprinters only the BCI-6 line.

If you plan to use only Canon OEM cartridges the current lineup is only slightly better technology than the previous generation.-----but still reason enough to go with the newest models.

But even the chipped Canons run rings around other brand printers also using OEM cartridges in terms of economy.

Or at least thats my take on the matter----for more information google nifty stuff forums or steves digicams.

so anything using CL cartridges is chipped?

if so, then of the ones i listed, only IP6000D is BCI cartridges.

will i be making much of a sacrifice by using refills instead of oem? will quality of pictures or lifespan printer be affected?

Yes, the CLI-8 cartridges are chipped. And so is the BCI-5 text black.

It might be argued that the new cromalife 100 inks are slightly superior in fade resistance to non-oem inks.-------in terms of quality and printer life span----users on nifty stuff forums report no such problems with many inks. But possible problems with other inks not forulated to be compatable with Canon printers.----So why take my word for it or buy a pig in the poke? When you can see the posted experiences of these folks who have often run gallons of non-oem ink through their printers.

Or use non-oem prefilled cartridges.-------in my case, I use www.bulkinkjetcarts.com but other good vendors exist. But I only bought after I saw a favorable review and some in debth scientific comparisons in regard to these cartridges.

So all I can say is look-----see what they have to say about printers and various ink alternatives.
Lots to learn and why regret not learning something you wished you knew before you bought.-as opposed to learning it after and then regretting it.
