Which PCI-e x1 controller to add a couple more SATA ports?

I need to add a few more SATA ports to my new build. I'm looking at the 2/4 port SATA controllers and trying to pick a gem out of what appears to be a field of coal.

My requirements:

- PCI-e x1
- 2 or 4 ports SATA II or SATA III
- NON RAID (I'll be using Windows dynamic disks)
- Preferably a chipset that is natively supported by Windows

Which chipsets should I be looking for? I'm looking for cheap and solid here, all it needs to do is host a few drives so that I can NTFS junction a few folders off my SSD.

any that have compatibility with ICH raid are a good bet (they will extend your ICH capabilities and boot no problems).

Cheap and good (aka reliable) are not the easiest.

I'll take good over cheap, I just don't want to pay for things like a dedicated IO processor since I won't be needing it. $75-100 is fine, any more than that & I'll just go get a PERC 5i or equivalent.

What do you mean by ICH compatible? Can you give an example? Most of the stuff I'm finding is Marvell or JMicron chipsets.

nice. i'd take a perc anyday over software raid. software raid sucks except for maybe ssd.

P410i with 1gb FBWC would be sweet indeed. you are comparing good LSI to junk marvell chipsets man. whole nother league.

Get the Perc 5i if you have any doubts
