Well, as far as all out ROCK goes, it's gotta be Quake2. :D Dropping the install CD into my CD player and skiping the data track to #2 and listening to that is awesome :)

But as far as ambiance or music that goes along with what's going on in the game, I'll have to say either Jedi Outcast with Return to Castle Wolfenstein in a close second.

Ditto on Doom, and Quake 2 (although the latter I'm more prone to play in my car than on the computer ;) ).

Others that are sweet are Diablo II, and Heroes of Might & Magic 2 and 3. On another level, I found Commander Keen 4-6 to have very appropriate and rather fun background music. :)

Double Dragon on the NES. I still can remember the music, although it's been about 7 years, I played it last.

The Streets of Rage series (not PC games, but too good to exclude)
Unreal
The Descent series

Anyone remember that catchy music that played with California Games? :p

Anyway, I like some of the Dungeon Siege music. Part is quite annoying instead though.

Carmageddon 2 had some Iron Maiden songs for soundtrack, that rocked. Doom1 and 2 had cool backround music, too (specially when played with GUS ;)

Never heard the music of the Doom series :(
We didn't have sound cards in the computers at the university, and by the time I put the game on a computer with soundcard it was too new and wasn't supported by Doom! :( :( :(

the most involving is by far Deus-Ex and i cant believe nobody mentioned that yet! Gotta love that theme song! :)

Mario games tend to have memorable soundtracks too :)

You my friend, know exactly what's going on. I couldn't agree with you more.

Howabout Mechwarrior II? That CD was also cool just to listen to.

Hell yah, the Mech II soundtrack was great.

I personally though alot of the Half-Life sound track was great. Tribes 2 had some good techno on it as well. The Total Annihilation was brilliant too IMO. Decent 3 also had some decent stuff... but nothing as good as the first 2 with stuff from Type O Negative :D

I am not sure of any computer games strangely.. my favorite video games with good music in general are: Tony Hawk pro skater series, and Twisted Metal series. those series' have AWESOME soundtracks!

Surprised no one's mentioned Medal of Honor yet. The music is very fitting dramatically. Actually, the whole game is realistic and extremely fun to play. :)

I'm such a big fan of movie and video game soundtracks, that there are way too many to mention!

Some definite favorites, though:

King's Quest IV (the first PC game to use a soundcard)
Leisure Suit Larry 3
Nova 9
Doom
Batman (for NES)
Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3
Legend of Zelda
Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross
CASTLEVANIA SERIES <-- Suprised nobody's mentioned these
Quake II
Star Control 2
Diablo 2
Baldur's Gate
Medal of Honor

the list goes on and on... :)
