I remember it looking more like this:

Was Bioshock Infinite downgraded during production? I mean look at the difference in the shading quality.

The top image is a cut scene ( I think part of DLC since i just finished the game and don't remember that part specifically), bottom is gameplay.

The above image is a pre-rendered scene from the debut trailer way back in 2010. It's about 1 minute in.

A lot of content from the game was cut or reworked though. Not much of what appeared in the gameplay trailers from 2011 and 2012 appeared in the final game.

Ya, that's a cutscene. Not sure from where. The graphics that shipped were beautiful, so I'm not complaining.

The top image clearly applies filtering for a cut scene.

Look at the E3 gameplay footage from 2011. You can see that what they were showing us is not better than what was shipped.

It may not look that much different graphically, but there's a huge difference in game play. The final game was a far cry from what was shown in that demo, and this one:

I was so disappointed in Infinite that I haven't even touched the DLC I preordered. A cool setting that looks nice, but was just boring compared to what they showed us originally. It boggles my mind how well reviewed it is... it's like nobody remembers how much they were lied to

No, it's because what really matters is the quality of the game that was shipped...NOT the pre-release stuff that is specifically made to highlight certain features and not actual game play.

A lot of what they design for pre-release videos never makes it into the final game anyhow.

Perhaps the take-away is to ignore the hype and judge the product on its own merits by your own standards; or perhaps your standards are jaded by hype? I've been taught that expectations are a huge killer of attempts to live in the moment. Ignore preconceptions and live in the now. It's fine to use other's opinions in deciding which experiences are worthwhile, but it's not fine to substitute anyone else's judgement for your own.

I was satisfied by the graphics quality of Bioshock Infinite. It was right at the edge of what my system at the time could play at max quality @ 1080.

I much prefer the second image, and that's what we got in-game. The gameplay wasn't that great but the graphics were beautiful.

What is the main thing separating the first image from the second? Besides the color pallete and obviously it is lower resolution but looks like it probably came from an ultra HD pre-render.

Is high quality global illumination the main thing that makes the first image look so spectacular?

?

Sure the second image is higher resolution and much sharper, but the first image is obviously rendering much more advanced graphics.

The first image looks absolutely terrible. It's like looking through a smeared bottle or something. The second image looks great, especially during in-game movement where it feels incredibly realistic.

I loved the game, I just finished it last week. The graphics are great, story was awesome. It deserved the praise it got.
