well im having a problem on figuring out what pieces of hardware i need to replace.

Basically my computer started crashing and my monitor screen will flicker right before the crashes. so i turned off my computer and opened up the case to check whats going on. i noticed that a wire was caught in my cpu fan =/. i quickly pulled it out of there, but by them i already assumed something is fried. but i can not seem to locate what is fried or if there is multiple parts that are fried.

I first thought the cpu was fried and possibly my motherboard. so i took out my power supply, but then i noticed my antec 430 truepower supply had 3 pins where it looked really burned. so i thought it was my power supply, and i just ordered a power supply and i was borrowing my roomates for a day or 2. everything seemed to work perfect and all, no crashs or anything. but after a while i pulled out his power supply just to check on everything and i noticed that the same exact pins that were burnt on my power supply was starting to burn on his. it looked very minor, it just started to turn very light brown so i hope its ok.

so im wondering if those 3 pins power up, and possibly that device could be causing my powersupplys to become damaged. the 3 pins that are burned is end on the right side of the atx connecter. it looks like it is 3 orange wires. im wondering if anyone knows what those 3 wires power up directly or are they just part of the pins that powerup the whole motherboard and all.

So this is all i know at the moment is that i will be replacing my powersupply, but what are the other things that i will need to replace? im thinking that it could be my motherboard, my cpu, cpu fan, or my graphics card. but i cant locate the real source of the problem. i don't want to buy a new system to replace this one so hopefully someone can help me solve this problem.

im running a
p4 2.4c (was overclocked to 3.0, but every since the crash i left it at 2.4)
512 geil ram pc3200 or 3500 i forget
gainward gf4 ti4800 se (was overclocked a bit, but every since the crash i defaulted it)
zalman cpu fan
motherboard - abit is7

if you need a more detailed description plz let me know, i really need to solve this problem

you said you got a wire stuck in your cpu fan... did it fray or break or ground out or anything? was the fan spinning? which wire was it? one of the fans wires? or another wire?

Well, the three wires you described are the +3.3V, its pins 1,2 and 11, they usually power devices liek the video card, the cpu or the memory. I hope no damage has occured to any of those devices, chances are if the machine WAS running ok, there may be no problems with the peripherals, but you may have shorted or grounded something bad on the board thats causing those burn marks, i would lean towards the board first before pointing fingers at any other components

thanks for helping me narrow it down somewhat, anything helps =).

it happens to be a wire from my powersupply, i have the antec truepower supply, and it comes with a 3 pin wire to plug into your motherboard, im not sure if its so u can check ur power supply fan rpms or for the fan. neither the cpu fan or that wire that got stuck in the cpu fan broke or anything. i guess i'll check my motherboard first.

thanks for the help
