I'm currently considering the Alpha 8942... but I just spotted this one. Its a bit cheaper than the Alpha and it seems to perform extremely well.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Well first off what are your temps and is there really a need to change anything??? Where is a comparison of the alpha to the new taisol??? I think with the alpha you have one of thelargest copper core heatsinks available with a copper core that is large enough to encompass the entire IHS plate of the p4...unlike POS Thermaltake volcaon models...I also think you could play with different 80mm fans to get better performance out of the alpha as well as look at some of the mods for 92mm fans and the alpha....HIgh cfm fans can really help the performance...If you are using anything not around 50cfm with the alpha you are really missing out on its best performance...

Right now, I'm getting around 53 degrees under load, using stock Intel heatsink.

Oh my bad...I read wrong and thought you already had alpha...Yes I would upgrade but may look for a few more reviews of the thing first before I jumped on taisol hsf. The alpha 8942 is proven winner with an 80mm fan like a ys tech fully adjustable...With your 53c load temp I bet the alpha can get that down about 8c under load and leave room for some ocing...The high cfm really helps as the chip starts producing the heat....

Quick question: have you overclocked your CPU with the Intel retail heatsink?

If you have, how many extra mhz did you get after switching to the Alpha?

I never topped my retail hsf out...I just ran up the fsb until the cpu got to hot under load for my standards... The problem with the retail sink for like m,y 1.6 and 1.8's was that it only runs at 2700rpm or less and that is not really enough once you get past 2.4ghz. The temp at 2.4ghz with my 1.8 and it was like mid to upper 50's on an asus mobo which I know records lower temps and likely would have been 66c on my epox. My alpha at speed listed down below tops out at 50c on my epox mobo after intense cpu burning. This temps would be in the mid 40's on an asus mobo I am sure....

Make sure you use AS3 properly applied...It takes about 2-4 days to cure and temps over that time can drop up to 2-4c as well in my experience

I got my 1.6A to 2.608 with the stock hsf and to 2.640 with a PAL8924 and a 47cfm Papst fan

i have my P4 1.6A overclocked to 2.32 GHz using the Swiftech MCX4000. temps are 26C at idle and 35C during load. it's a bit pricey but i am getting good results. here's a good article comparing the alpha vs. swiftech: Alpha vs. Swiftech
