Which OS's network well together?

I know that XP Home and XP Pro do not network well together.

What about XP Media Edition? Does Media Edition network well with either XP Home or XP Pro?

Also, what about Vista? I have a client that just bought a Vista system, and he wants to network it with his other computers. Which OS's will Vista network well with:

XP Home
XP Pro
XP Media Center Edition

What do you mean by "XP Home and XP Pro do not network well together"? Are you referring to setting Security for Shares?

Yes, when I was setting up a system that had XP Home on one system and XP Pro on another, I had a heck of a time trying to get them to network with each other, share files, etc. Never did it successfully. I then came to this board and was told that XP Home and XP Pro do not network well together. So, XP Pro was put on the system that had XP Home and all was well. It was seamless after that to network them.

Well, NT, Win2000, 2003, and all versions of XP EXCEPT for XP Home make full NTFS Security settings available to the User.

And what does that mean? If the XP Home system has the FAT32 file system, will that create havoc? And even if the XP Home system has the NTFS file system, since it does not have the full NTFS Security Settings available, I'm guessing that will make it quite difficult to network them together?

If so, what do you suggest? Upgrade all systems to XP Pro or XP Vista?

If you use a Workgroup, XP Home and Pro file sharing works with a 1 minute setup. The only thing you need to tell the MS home network wizard is the name of the workgroup.

Perhaps when you had problems before you tried using a Domain instead of a Workgroup, or didn't notice that you had 2 different workgroup names.

It's true that XP Home doesn't work in a business setting with a domain controller, exchange server, etc. but that doesn't sound like what you're talking about.

no version other than xp pro can join a domain and only 3 versions of Vista can.

OpenBSD, Linux, FreeBSD, and NetBSD seem to have no trouble networking with anything ....

Never used a domain...only a workgroup. They both had the same workgroup name, but there were definitely issues.

My roommates PC is XP Home, mine is XP Pro, simple networking (file sharing via workgroup) works fine with no special settings.

The problem that is being described isn't a "networking" issue. It's a file-sharing issue.

The learning curve is a bit steeper than what the vast majority of people want to face. Also, I think some people are intimidated by command lines.

XP Home and Pro network fine together in a workgroup depending on what you need to do. If you want to do anything advanced like encryption on an NTFS drive or advanced file sharing then no, XP Home can't do it.

For basic home networking, XP and Home have identical features and communicate to each other quite nicely.

Now Windows 2000 can be a beast to network with. Its too secure for the lazy home networker like me who doesn't want to jump through security hoops.
