I'm upgrading from P2 400 w/ TNT2 to a 1Ghz Tbird w/ GF2 Ultra, and I can't decide which OS to install.
I was running winME on my IBM 75GXP HDD (on the P2) until it developed bad sectors due to the shutting-down-too-fast problem. I got the HDD replaced (using my spare hdd atm), and now I have all the parts for the upgrade bar the case, and I can't decide for the life of me what OS to use. I can't decide between 98se, winME and win2000. I've used them all and have no particular preference.
I got the patch which remedies the shutdown problem, but I'm dubious as to whether it will work properly. I don't want to go through the hassle of low-level formatting. Due to this, I was thinking of installing win2000, but it eats system resources like nobody's business, and I'm not sure even with the system I'm upgrading to, whether it'll run satisfactorily quickly (I'm primarily a gamer). I also have the annoying opengl refresh rate problem with win2000 - the desktop goes to 100hz ok, but in opengl it reverts back to 60hz - not sure how to fix it.
All I want is a bit of stability in the OS, a fully-functional hdd, and decent fps. It's not a lot to ask, but MS don't seem to have an OS that matches those requirements... *sigh*
Opinions welcome,
Thanks
