I'm about to build a Pc, for audio/video editing. (NOT an HTPC) Which OS, should I use ? I know that MCE 2005 is good for playback, but is it the best choice for editing ?
Buy Windows. Most good software is available for Windows. However, Linux does have some good exclusive software such as Cinelerra. For that just go here and have them ship you a free Ubuntu (Linux distro) Live CD. Then you can dual-boot to which ever OS you need to use.
Of course maybe you'd like to buy a Mac, that way you can have all three major OS'es on your system. Good luck.
Well normally I've used Sony Vegas in the past, but its not free (just like all other professional video editing software). There are a few linux livecds that bundle tons of media editing software like MediainLinux and dyne:bolic. Maybe you can give them a shot since they're free and just run off a livecd. If they don't work out then just look for windows programs like Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Ulead DVD Workshop, etc.
Gonna make me? I mean seriously, I do all my digital work now on Win2K including hi-def animations on workstations I built myself.
Right now my workstations are all dual core AMD 64's -a platform you can't (legally) run OSX on, but has no problem running any Windows or Linux platform of my choosing.
A 3ghz single processor Core 2 duo will also beat a $2500 2.66ghz Mac Pro in all but a few brain-dead rendering tasks, and be drastically cheaper to build. The money difference I could actually put into productivity improving professional video editing software and not the hardware to support the OS.
FYI - 'Sin City' was rendered on Windows XP, not OSX or any Apple platform. 'Sky Captain' was rendered on Apple, which is not surprising.
