i notice that at some webhosting places that windows based server plans are more expensive than the linux/unix based servers.

but why do they cost more? we all know that windows isnt as efficient as linux/unix and that the hosting companies serve less users compared to using linux/unix as a result, but why the price difference? maybe seamless frontpage integration?

also if they were the same price, which would you choose? and why?

Linux/Unix even if it cost more because increased efficiency and security. Granted these two operating systems are not without some security issues but as long as the system admin pays attention and updates as needed as with any operating system you should have no trouble. I manage a data center and see windows server guys in there all the time doing system maintenance which normally requires downtime do to reboots and these are quite frequent but rarely see Linux/Unix admins in there except for hardware upgrades typically.
my .02 anyway

windows costs more to support, for various reasons and what you choose should depend on your functionality requirements

Linux.

More specifically, Redhat Enterprise Edition.

As for the price difference, its because of windows licensing costs. Linux is free (mostly) so its also free to put on servers. When people rent windows servers they also need to rent windows licenses and those usually run $30 a month or so. If you need to find an admin, Windows server admins are also usually more expensive and harder to find, than their linux counterparts.

Linux

Specifically Debian. It's what I run all of my servers on, both public & private.

If I wasn't going to use ASP.NET, unix.

What he said.

The hosting company has to pay for Windows, SQL Server, and whatever else is needed to run the operation. Linux mostly all of the stuff is free/open-source.

Not to mention .NET/ASP and such are resource hogs and require more processor/memory than say PHP/MySQL.

If they were both the same price I would still go with Linux. I have no idea who Windows hosting sites offer access to admin your site (Frontpage & FTP?) but it can't be better than say DirectAdmin (for n00bs) and shell for power admins.
