Windows is the only OS for gaming. Games are only designed for Windows. Very rarely do you see Linux ports or Mac ports.

Warcraft 3 can be played on Mac, and Counter-Strike can be played on Linux. Most other games can only be played on windows.

I'd take 2000 over XP anyday. I'd rather own my OS than lease it.

That's correct. Also, I didn't like all the crap that was loaded on it and the fact they dumbed it down.

Would you be more specific? I've used both and prefer XP.

Go with XP - I can't understand anyone recommending 2000 over XP. Anyone who doesn't like the interface can switch it to look like 2k and activation has worked flawlessly for me

Win2k is going the same route as Win98/WinMe. No new service packs or security fixes/patches. Makes no sense for a user to start on it now. But it did rock in its day :)

Are you sure about that? There will not be any new service packs for Windows 2000, but security patches and fixes will continue until 2010 last I heard. And I don't think you can say Windows 2000 is going the same route as Windows 98/ME. Windows 2000 is still a quality and respectable OS in this day and age where as the POS of Windows 98/ME should have been completely phased out years ago!!

win98se, win2k & winXP all work fine on AMD systems. As for gaming many will say one is better than the other. But this cannot be demostrated. Myself and others have tested games in all these OS's. There is little or no difference in IQ or FPS. I gamed (single player) exclusively in 98se until Doom 3 came out (which did not work on 98se). I now use a dual boot system with 98se and win2kpro. I've tried XP and don't like it.

You don't have to activate with the correct use of a certain key, you know?

They do not all work fine, and you gave the example why. Games don't support them. I don't know what it is you don't like about XP, it's better than 98. At home I skipped from 98 straight to XP and haven't looked back. 98 lacks support and doesn't have all the functionality of XP, so there's no reason to stick with it and lots of reasons to upgrade. 2k will lose support soon too.

I played Far Cry etc on 98se. Doom 3 is the only game I know of which doesn't work with 98se.

Conversly, some older good games like System Shock 2 don't work with XP (compatiblity mode doesn't work either).

His question is about GAMING. There is no no additional functionality with regards to gaming with these OS's, other than the rare instance (actually D3 is the only one I am aware of) where a game does not support one or the other of the OS's. Although, I would expect this trend of win98se not being supported to contune with newer titles.

Unless I mis-understand his OP, the answer is that AMD doesn't favor one OS over the other. An AMD system works well with all OS. I have used 98se, win2k & XP on my AMD rig, all work well.
