my laptop comes with:
Pentium 266MMX, 96meg ram, 4gb hd. It's mainly for doing office stuff, mp3 and internet. never think about playing games on it.

Windows 98 definitely, since you're on such a slow processor, but you could try Windows 2000 if you have it. The latter would be better, if you don't mind waiting a little more than usual. :)

ok, reality check here.... Windows 2000 was the first OS actually designed with portable computing in mind. It has better power management, better standby and hibernate support and comes out of the box with drivers for most major laptop hardware.

It makes windows 95, 98 and ME look like toys in comparison.

Wow,
Here's a reality check:
Pentium 266MMX, 96meg ram, 4gb hd
With this system, definitely go with Wiin98. Win2K almost requires 128mb of ram to work well. While I think you could do it and just see a performance decrease. I would still go with 98 for a 266mhz cpu, it will just feel so much more "zippy" for lack of a better word. I always suggest using 98Lite with any 98 or 98se install. If you're interested, check it out at 98lite.net. Best of luck.

Unless the notebook is optimized for Windows 2000, then it will NOT work well, if at all.

Do you have Windows 95? It's so much faster than Windows 98 or Windows ME. I have a ThinkPad 380 with 233MHz, 96MB RAM, and 4GB HD (almost the same setup). Windows 95 is blazing fast. I tried upgrading to Windows 98 and Windows ME but both slowed the computer down SIGNIFICANTLY to a turtle pace.

Yes, 95 is exactly the direction you should be looking, but 98lite runs just as fast with all the 98se updates. No need for OSR2 or other updates in 95, just install 98lite and you get all those updates with the speed of 95. Check it out, you won't be sorry.

Ditto on the 98lite bit. I was running 98se + 98lite all my systems before transitioning to Win2k. Works great for older machines, unless of course you're addicted to -Active Desktop- or something.
