I threw a fresh copy of xp pro on there. I like how xp pro has most of the drivers built in the database and I think its alot more user friendly(or is it?)

anyways, I have win2k pro also but was wondering if it would be better and if i would see a performance increase with win2k pro?

what do you guys thinks

400mhz p2,256 ram, 10gb HD. does it have a huge driver database like win xp?

thx

I'd stick with XP Pro or Home. Win2k didn't have as large of a driver database as XP since it is older. XP takes up a bit more RAM but with 256MB you have plenty for normal usage. XP also boots faster than Win2k and will likely be getting security updates (and holes) more often than Win2k. :)

Agree.

However, you might see more resources available if you have the patience to install the necessary linux drivers and run linux as your os.

XP will run relatively fine on that system with those resources. I'd tweak it though. Don't run all the eyecandy and it will make a significant difference for the most part.

Try www.blackviper.com for some good info about streamlining your xp install. He's pretty thorough.

Everyone says that 2k runs very well on 98se-ish resources so if it works for you then you might want to try 2k.

Good luck.

My brother has a 400 mhz lappy with 20 gb hdd and 256mb ram. It works flawless on his system. He has win2k on it before and after upgrading he didnt notice any slowdowns compared to XP. So I'll say stick with xp. or throw on a linux dist on it :p

I have Windows 2000 on a desktop computer, and compared to XP it isn't faster (once you set the Windows XP to run in "classic" mode). The boot and shutdown times are quite a bit larger than with XP, but I use it for reasons other than speed (if I would want just the speed, then XP would be the chosen one)
