Max out the RAM, put XP Pro on it, and turn all of XP's eye candy off.

SInce laptops have slow HDs. boot time will be pretty slow under W2K - XP will boot much faster. Even if you hibernate/sleep most of the time with only an occasional reboot, XP will make them far less painful.

Good luck!

:D XP PRO works wonderfully on my Latitude CPiA 400XT. (P-II, 400mhz) And it only has 128mb of RAM. Someday I'll update to 256mb. Careful on the RAM upgrade with Dell. I believe that they are finiky about what you put in, just any old SODIMM may not work right. Check around, but last I checked Dell, they were the cheapest on RAM upgrade anyway.

I'm running XP on my K6-2 400mhz, 160mb ram, 4.3gig hdd laptop. Course I got all the fisher-price interface turned off and other un-needed services. I'm shocked on how well this laptop is running XP.
