Which OS for playing "older" games

Between Windows 2000 and Windows 98se, which one is most compatible with older FPS games such as doom, quake, tie fighter, mdk? This will be run on a tbird 1.4 with 512mb of ram, so slight variations in frame rates will not bother me much.

I understand stability enhancements of 98, and also understand that most modern games will run on 2000. Thanks.
