which os for friend?

I'm going to set up a second computer at a friends house. I'm putting a 40gig HD in so he can use it as a mass storage server for his MP3s. Then I'm going to network it to his laptop.

My question is: Which os should I use? He's fairly computer illiterate. I wanted to use 2000 but I wondered if ME or 98se would be easier on him.

Any suggestions?

I am not a software guru, and really only base this opinion on what has worked for me in the past. I use Win ME on my systems because I don't mind the occasional glitch and am prepared to deal with them as they come (and I game a lot and enjoy turboGL support). But when I build a system for work or for someone else (if they are not gaming) I use Win2k. It seems to be more stable and reliable. If all he is doing is playing MP3's, or even if he's editing them with Sound Forge or Cubasis, Win2k would probably be your best bet.

Yes, he's going to use it as a file server. He'll use the laptop for the editing and stuff.
He's in a band and records a lot of stuff. The 10gig in his laptop ran out quick. So I was able to get him a Celeron 300mhz for free, then I threw in a 40gig (man they're cheap nowadays).

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. I think I'm going to use Win2k then.
I was also planning on redoing his laptop with Win2k. He's had no end of BSODs with 98.

The next question is, NTFS or FAT32?

Try out Linux. And run a MP3 streaming server with many channels. Since he is fairly comp-literate, he should have a lot of fun.
And try using reiserfs for the mp3 storage.

Actually he's not very computer literate. He's more one of those book smart but tech dumb. I'm trying to make this as simple as possible, because I'm the one he's going to call for help :^)

What is reiserfs? I don't think I've heard of that. Of course I don't know much about Linux. It's on my list though.

ReiserFS is a journaling filesystem for linux (kinda like NTFS for Win2k). If you're going to set it up, then it doesn't matter if he's computer literate or not as to which OS the server runs. Linux REALLY shines as a server and would server this purpose very well. He wouldn't even know which OS it was running, except for the fact that the server would always be up?
