Which OS Choice? Xp 32 or 64?

Hi All, I need some advice. Ive finally ordered up my new components for my PC, which is a Pentium 940D along with a raid enabled motherboard, GEForce 9800gt etc etc.

Should I upgrade to Windows XP 64bit or stick with the tried and trusted 32bit edition? Will the dual core processor benefit under the old 32bit windows? I like to use multiple apps simultaneously so im hoping so.

I am an avid World of Warcraft player and use the usual Office 2003 stuff also.

Any advice would be appreciated.

For the general user I'd stick with 32bit windows until Vista comes along. Why waste the money when you'll have to upgrade again in a few months.

Just so you know, 64bit and Duel-Core are not as closely related as it appears you think they are. My opinion, stick with 32bit as you will not get a significant benifit from 64bit, and probably more head aches then it is worth. Once Vista 64bit hits the consumer market, you will find yourself in a much better spot for an upgrade.

I'm using 64 bit on my dual core and I have had not ONE problem. It's faster, too, but not by much. I'm sticking with XP x64 until Vista comes out

We poked around with 64 and didn't find it to be any faster. No specific benchmarks or anything, but the overall "feel" felt the same as 32. This is mainly on A64X2 machines with higher end gamer cards and at least 1gig memory.

It's also a lot easier to find drivers for regular plain 32-bit XP and those driver updates seem to be more frequent too.

I'm sticking with 32. My buddies are sticking with 32.

With an intel based system, you shouldn't have many problems finding drivers for XP 64 bit. Hell, creative even has drivers for it.

wtf is a geforce 9800gt?

If you want to experiment with 64 bit, be sure you can find drivers for all onboard and offboard peripherials first and be prepared to have issues running programs that were written for 32 bit.... Specifically, not all of the shell extentions that work under 32 bit are going to be available under 64bit...

If you have 4GB of RAM, you should consider XP x64 if you want to be able to use all of it. However, otherwise, it may not be worth the hassle unless you have some programs that show significant gains from being recompiled with 64 bit support.

the whole point of 64bit is to address more ram, but you can use your small amount of ram to run it.
