Which order to install the Motherboard, Cpu, Fan in?..

I've done this a few dozen times a couple of years ago, but I don't know if things changed since then.

I got me an Epox 8K7A+ motherboard, AMD 1.33 Ghz CPU and a cooling fan.
Now, which order do I perform these operations in?

A. Install the motherboard in the case
B. Install the CPU on the motherboard
C. Attach the cooling fan to the CPU

Thanks!

Thanks guys, I want to gather some more information though 🙂

Please list your installation order. Thanks!

Depending on your case, I think you will find it MUCH easier to install the cpu and heatsink outside of the case. I don't see why you would want to install that while its in the case. Just makes for a slightly more difficult install do to limited space.

Stang46,

I was afraid that if you install the cooling fan on the mobo and then put then put the mobo in the case, the cooler might fall off. If you install the cooler when the mobo is already in place, you minimize the chances of it falling off?..

if you have a removeable motherboard tray, i would take that out. install the motherboard, cpu, then the cooler. after that, stick in your mobo tray, attach all the wires, and then screw it on tight.

LuNoTiCK,

What??? C,B,A only works for 486's where plastic clips from the fan attached directly to the CPU and not to the ZIF socket.

Correct:

B. Install the CPU on the motherboard
C. Attach the cooling fan to the CPU
A. Install the motherboard in the case

If your case is at all constrained, this is the order you want to go with. Even with a roomy case, it is easier to firmly attach the CPU fan when free of the case.

Craig

Just be sure to put the CPU in before the cooling fan. 😀
Otherwise, I just do whichever order I feel like using.

you dont want to flex your motherboard so one should install the CPU and heatsink/fan amd RAM before putting your motherboard in the case.

I'd do BCA. AMD recommends that order as well but they say you can install the mobo in first if you wish.

Socket-A heatsinks are very tight and are quite hard to install if the motherboard is already in the case. I learnt that lesson when going from a K6-3 to a Duron. 🙂

I generally install the CPU, memory, and video card outside the case, then boot to bios outside the case. The power supply cables are usually long enough or the Case can be arranged in such a way that it will reach. This gives me a quick check of the vital components without the labor of installing it in the case, now I know that it is all working so any troubles I have in the case are due to the installation into the case.

Edit: The HS/fan is part of the CPU installation.

What do you know, it IS the Glaciator! (I should be receiving it tomorrow.. well, today now that it's 1 am). How can it crush the core if it's got those sexy long rubber legs on it?

Please post more insider info on this Glaciator beast.
