Hi,
A tree is a convenient to break a large data sets into smaller ones.By presenting a learning set to the root asking questions at each .... node,the data at leaves can often be analyzed.
1)exterior
2)interior
3)inward
4)upward

Based on the misplacement of the question and its contents and the time of year it looks more like an exam question!!

For example, a classifier to predict the likelihood that a credit card transaction is fraudulent may use an interior node to divide training data sets into two sets, depending upon whether or ont five or fewer transations were processed during the previous hour. After a series of such questions, each life can be labeled fraud/no-fraud by using a simple majority vote. Tree based classifiers were independently invented in information theory, statistics, pattern recognition and machine learning.

Actually first just make sure you plant it first [interior] and then water it each day for several years and you get a tree [exterior] ;)
