Ok, this is probably a topic that has been discussed to the moon and back a few times, but forgive me, I'm rather new to Anandtech and need to ask the question. I am currently using WIN Me. Now before all of you give me a tongue lashing, I already know that ME is basically a piece of %^$# and realize why the upgrade was only $9.95. My question is this: Should I stick with WIN 98SE, 2K, or go for XP?

I have ME on my P III sytem (and I can't wait to reformat and reinstall 98SE) and WinXP pro on my AMD Athlon XP 1800+ sytem. I really like the stability of XP.

My experience has been that XP is a more colorful version of Win2k. I've used both and stick with windows 2000 because I prefer a workstation that is more cut and dry and less bloated.

Personally, I'd go with XP over 2000 despite the bloat for two main reasons: (1) faster boot time; and (2) system restore that gives me some breathing space in case I screw up with something big time.

Hope that helps,
🙂atwl

If you have a decent computer, go with Win2k. If you're computer is older, go with 98SE cause it uses less RAM and is a bit faster.

XP just has lots of pretty bloat, utterly pointless for most people. And it's slower than either, and uses a rediculous amount or RAM just for a clean boot.
