I've written my own media player (GAmp), although it uses the WMP backend.
It's pretty cool writing open source software, but the problem is (at least in windows land) no one is interested in contributing, even in the slightest way. That has pretty much made me disinterested in writing open source apps. I've been told it's very different in Linux land, but I've not done anything for the linux platform.
It's a little bit different just because most OSS users have an idea of what OSS means and how it's different than closed source "freeware" crap. And if your application is popular you'll get help from distributions but you're still likely to not get anything more than complaints/bug reports from most people since most people have no programming knowledge.
