i was told that there would be not mmuch difference between the chaintech and the onboard sound. is this true?

I have that Chaintech card and it was an upgrade over the onboard sound on my MSI mobo. The only thing with the Chaintech is that it came with a sorry set of software. Once I downloaded the new software/driver set for it it works and sounds great. Mine is driving a 5.1 system. Can't comment on the other card though as I haven't used one. I bought the Chaintech because of all the excellent reviews and the good price.
