I am looking to spend around $1500 to $2000 on a laptop but closer to $1500 is preferred. I have been looking on powernotebooks.com and like what they have to offer, but I am nervous about getting one. Any info about them and which laptop from them would be good will help.

Also, I have been recently looking at the ThinkPad T42, Dell 600m, and the Dell D600. Any insight on which laptop will not cost me too much and have good durability/performance will help.

I basically want a Dothan 1.7 or 1.8gHz processor, a 40 gig hd, 512mb of mem, and at least a b/g wireless card if that will help.

Hey,

Yeah I am in the same market for exactly the computer you want. I'm looking at the T41/T42, Dell D600 - those are the two main lappies I'm considering. The 600m, my friend has - the build is terrible, it's like cheap plastic.

My roommate has the D600, I'm definitely considering it, especially since Dell has 15% off sale on it now. The T41, and the D600 are comparable I'd say, but of course IBM has better build quality, yadda yadda.

Let me know which one you decide on... I still have a month or so before I buy one. Good luck.

The Dell Latitude D600 and Inspiron 600m really are the same box, with the Inspiron usually having newer components (though they change quickly; compared to the D600 with doesn't change but ever ~12 months)

The T41 is a nice system also, and like Rx77 said, it is very similar to the D600 (both are 'mainstream' business category systems). The T41 is a little more durable and a little thinner. Plus it is mainly a mental case, where the D600 is metal inside, but plasic on the exterior.

On Monday, Dell will start shipping the Dothan 1.7 & 1.8 CPUs. Otherwise if waiting is an option, in late Sept, Dell will be releasing their new updated lines.
