Lets say if you game on a 19" LCD with some AA...which is a better buy between the 9600GT OC and a normal 8800GT 512mb ? :D

well if its a 19" LCD then your native resolution is 1280x1024?

based on that alone, you could get by very nicely with a 256MB 8800GT and save some money.
BUT you stated that you like AA (because of the "low" resolution ;) yes, 5:4 is low today) and AA is a memory hog no less than its a power hog so if you can find a 512MB 8800GT around 200$ it would be more than enough for anything (except crysis) you would want to run in the next 1.5-2 years.

what CPU do you have? at those resolutions you could be bottlenecked by your CPU. to get the most out of your soon-to-be 8800GT or 9600GT you'll need at least a dual-core around 3GHz (stock or overclocked)

My god, you really think that a 8800 GT will last that long? I guess it will start to struggle in games around the end of this year and surely won't last 2 years.

This is the one to buy.

+shipping but I agree. However, I would buy it from Chiefvalue using the coupon for about $9.xx cheaper.

See thread here.

yes i do think it will last him 2 years. at 1280x1024 he will be able to play anything he wants. games will be released on Source engine or UT3 engine which are already running very well on 8800GT cards. not every game will be like Crysis you know.

I have to disagree with you since not all the games that will be released in the next two years will use those two engines.Where did you get this idea? Also, source is very old and it won't be used in to many games from now on.
These directX 10 games are hard for the 8800 series. In my opinion every card that Nvidia and ATI has now are just to weak for directx 10 effects, so tell me how will the 8800 last two years since it can't really play the current technology games?

you will get a lot more usage out of the 8800gt, plus you'll probably get better resale down the road for it. That msi is an OC card, too, so you won't have to fiddle with anything at all, just plug and play!

edit: I bought a 3870 in november hoping for 2+ yrs. I wish that I would have waited for this deal b/c it's $40 less and it's a much better card.

$186 for 8800gt, or (if your motherboard supports SLI) 2 9600gt for $149 =$298, or if you want an X2 for CFX later on, hd3870x2 for $419

since he's comparing 2 inexpensive cards, i doubt he's looking for an expensive monster card.
