I travel for work, so I need a good laptop i can use for ocassional gaming, work, and good multimedia station. Both laptop price is almost identical for similar configuration, but ASUS got the edge with 5870 videocard. I also noticed that there are lots of quality issues with the Envy17 (gaps, mic issue, warp body). I've seen both laptop at best buy, and I can live with either or.. Just want to get you guys opinion for which one to get and why 🙂

Thx

hehehe, IC, but i am pretty sure there are horror stories for each model laptops 🙂
Regardless though, those 2 are the only model within my price range for the spec I want.
I guess ur right... I have to decided which horror stories to live with for the next 5 years 🙂

G73 with the 1080p screen is a good choice if you don't intend to play games.

Travel + Work + Occasional gaming = Envy 14.

Yes, it won't have anywhere near the gaming capability of either the G73 or Envy 17, but it has much better build quality, much better portability, and still enough power to play most games on medium / high.

I really can't stress enough how nice of a notebook it is.

Definitely a good value.

If you can spend more though, the $1599 Vaio Z gets my pick over the Envy 14

I recently bought the Best Buy model of the G73. It's $300 cheaper than the standard models and the main difference is that the screen is 1600x900 rather than 1920x1080.

Given that the GPU is essentially a downclocked 5770 (despite the misleading "mobility 5870" name), I actually prefer the lower native res since it results in smoother gameplay, and will let me play at native res as the laptop ages without having to turn down as many graphics options.

I don't know how people claim to see the difference between 1080p and 16x9 on a mere 17" screen anyway, especially since 1080p is only standard on much larger, 24", screens.

At any rate, I'm quite impressed with it. I already have a powerful PC, but the build quality, aesthetics, quietness, and performance of the $1200 G73 can't be beat.

Thanks for the input Matrice. I went to best buy last night and play around with both laptop to see which one appeal to me more aesthetically.

Anyway, the bestbuy version of G73 uses a downclocked 5770 ?? really ?? isnt that false advertisement ?

The mobile 5870 is based on a 5770, its got nothing to do with it being the Best Buy version. All G73's use the same GPU.

It's the equivalent of a down-clocked desktop HD 5770. Mobile GPUs are usually far less powerful than their desktop equivalents due to size, power, and heat constraints.

What is your budget/size requirements?

If I were you Id check the "Marketplace" on Notebookreview forums.

I picked up my Asus W90 for $1200 and its a BEAST! Core2Quad, 6GB RAM, 18.4" 1080p LCD (absolutely beautiful), DUAL ATi 4870's (easily smashing the 5870MR), 5.1 speakers BUILT IN, SOLID construction, etc...I think even compared to todays uber laptops its still in the top 5.

Other than that there are plenty of people selling Alienwares and the like that are more powerful in the Asus G73 price range.

At risk of pimping my pm, the g73 has been nothing but awesome. The bestbuy units don't seem to have 1/4 of the issues the other units have.

If you wait for 15 days, the upgrade to asus g73jh called the G73JW is coming out! with gtx460m 1.5gb vram, and wireless hdmi
