Hate Crime: An offense committed against another person, with the specific intent to cause harm to that person due to their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or culture, etc.

So, if calling the guy a geek/nerd, and then beating him up doesn't fit the above, I don't know what does.

Also, if it turns out the victim was white and the assailants were all the same non-white race, that's just add to the possiblity of this being a racially motivated hate crime (in addition to a hate crime of culture)

if the victim is white, chances are it won't be looked at as a hate crime...i don't know if you've noticed, but in order for it to be a hate crime it has to be against a minority...not trying to be racist here, but that's pretty much how it goes

I bet the nerd asked for it by trying to show off how cool he was by working on his laptop. The poor NFL guy and his posse were just trying to get some grub and the geek probably mistook them saying "word" for "nerd" or something, then the geek went and complained to management cuz he can't fight his own battles.
