ok, a friend a mine s looking to sell BOTH of his video cards so he can get a 6800 gt. which one is a better buy?

5900 ultra runs @ 5950 WITHOUT flash (475/950) - $200
9800 pro 256 mb runs @ 9800 XT speeds WITHOUT flash -$250

i looked at the Doom III benchies and both run it at 1208*768 w/ high settings....

other than doom III, farcry is another game i like to play but i am already 3/4 of the way done with it so its not a major concern

How much memory does the 5900 have? If it's 128mb then I would get the 9800.

$250 seems pretty steep though; I would almost be tempted to buy a new 128mb one for $180.

EDIT: Actually yeah, why not get a 6800NU if you're going to spend $250? I've seen them for around $270 and they solidly spank even the 9800XT.

Both are rips IMO. Those are the prices of NEW cards not used. I wouldn't buy either.

Shady, get a 6800NU at newegg for $289 shipped with Far Cry. Sell the Far Cry if you have it, and you're at the price of the Radeon 256.
I've just been playing Doom3 on my 6800NU at 12X10 High Q Quincunx, 4X AF. Going to try the 0X8X HardOCP recommends now to see which I like better.

That didn't take long, you need some AA.

I could have sworn I saw a 256mb 9800p for 228 new some-where... both are overpriced at least $50 if not more.

Neither. A 6800 vanilla can be had for the price of that 9800 and you get Far Cry. Sell Far Cry and your old video card and you're set.

Newegg has them for 223 every once in awhile so does zipzoom fly.

Lol either aren't really a GOOD deal. And wont last long at all with the perofrmance increases we are seeing from the next gen cards. However why not try to et him to lower the price and then resell it on ebay or something for a higher price. Your bound to catch someone who doesn't know sh!t about it and buys it for like 400$ (ok im exagerating but you get the point). then you can use that money and maybe a bit more to get a NU or a GT.

ok, if they are both overpriced, please point to where i can get a 5900 ultra for less? i know about neweggs occasional 9800 pro 256mb for $223 but i would have to pay tax anyway so it would come out to ~$242

thanx for the recommendations rollo and powderBB3d. i will look into it

Well I remember you sold your 9800pro early to get a new gen gpu. What makes you wanna get the same cards now if you don't mind me asking of course.
Maybe wait for R500/NV50? :D

well, i work at BB and my intentions were to use my discount to get a new gen card but we havent gotten them in yet and there is no sign as to when we will. i'm thinking of buying this current gen to allow me to play doom III or what not and hold me off til we get stock of the 6800GT or atleast X800 pro

the others are a waste of money

If you are gonna spend $250 might as well spend extra $30-40 and get a 6800 as it will be much faster than either of those cards.

9800Pro can be bought for around $170 now which is much better deal than either of them.

So just get the 9800Pro for much cheaper. 256mb wont help you much with the old cards because they are much slower.

Where were you when there were 300-350 deals on 6800GTs all over the internet? If you really wanted to buy a new generation card you should have jumped on them. Oh well maybe another one will pop up soon. I mean I am sure the world is not gonna end if you play doom 3 in september and not in august? And I am sure by then, a deal or 2 will have popped up.

Hot Deals. . . . $229.99

it's current ($236 if you order off the'net) and evidently it can be flashed to a 9800XT (easily)

A used card for those prices are steep . . . are you sure he's a "friend"? ;)

ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB @ Micro Center (online & B&M) for 235.98 shipped (229.99 if a store is nearby)

IF you're gonna pay $250 (for a used card) . . . spend a few bucks more for the 6800Standard . . . or get a NEW 9800256/256 > XT for LESS.
