My computer was running flawlessly until I made these changes (all within a 1 week period):
Replaced WD 6.4GB with Maxtor 30GB 7200 ATA/100.
Added Promise ULTRA ATA/100 controller with newest BIOS and drivers.
Replaced Celeron 333@500 with 566@850.
Added 128MB PC-133 module.
Replaced Encore 10BT NIC with SMC EtherpowerII 10/100 NIC with newest drivers.
Flashed MB BIOS with newest version.

My problem: About once-a-week my system will give the message during startup: "The registry cannot load the hive file Systemroot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.".
The emergency repair disk doesn't fix the problem and I have to re-load Windows each time.

I know its not due to overclocking because the last time I re-loaded Windows I left it at default speed and the problem occurred again. ANY HELP??

Windows 2000 SP-1
ABIT BM6 TZ BIOS
C2 566
256MB
ATI All-in-Wonder 128
Maxtor 30GB 7200 ATA/100
Promise ULTRA ATA/100
SMC 10/100 NIC
SB PCI128

I've heard that a corrupt registry can be due to overclocking and a failed load. Once corrupt it is always corrupt regardless of cpu setting. Did you try running regcleaner (search yahoo) to see if it will fix it? If that doesn't fix it then I would try a fresh install or replace the registry with a backup.

Good luck.

First thing I'd do is move the disk off the ata100 and plug it into the motherboard ide controller. I had problems with my ASUS A7V motherboard ATA100 controller running my 75GXP IBM drive. Since moving it to the ATA66 controller, no problems.
Here's what I was experiencing, not the same as you but....
1. System would reboot when I select Shutdown.
2. Modem connection would 'hang'. Still connected but no traffic.
3. Reformat, Reinstall W98SE, getting errors loading device drivers.
Windows registry checker pops up after install SB Live but no errors found running scanreg. BSOD - fatal OE at
xxxx:xxxx..
4. After install HP CD Writer it boots up to the windows splash screen then powers off. Last thing I see is
an error loading user.exe.
