Back-UPS Pro USB 500VA
or
Back-UPS LS 700VA

I know one has more power handling, BUT, i was reading the specs, the 500 says it handles Surge energy rating 420 joules, and the 700 dosnt say anything about it.....

what would you say is a better choice (never mind the 500/700 difference)

thanks for the help

They have the same circuit boards, and thus the same resistance to power surges. The only difference is the size of the transformers. BTW, APC UPS products aren't the best, nor are they the greatest values.

they are different models, one is office pro and one is LS. so why dosnt it say about the joules on the LS model?

I doubt they'd use different circuit boards...it'd be impractical from a manufacturing stand point. Even if it is a lower surge resistance rating, you can simply replace the MOVs in the LS with larger ones.

<< MOV?

so i should go with the LS then?

I'd go with the LS if you must go with APC.
MOV=metal oxide varistor, it's basically two capacitors hooked together. Replace the bottom one with a higher rated capacitor, and you've got a higher surge tolerance.

only thing im concerned about getting a UPS is for the AVR, because when the dryer comes on, the lights dim real quick

That's because the dyer is on a 220v line and sucks up power. I assume AVR is active voltage regulation. If you want voltage regulation, buy a line conditioner, not a UPS.

I just want to say I think this thread is FULL of incorrect information. To answer the first question I would go with the 700 but I don't know much about these UPS's. I think APC's quality has declined greatly recently.

<< ok i found one http://www.apc.com/products/line-r/index.cfm what would be better, 1250 or 600, all thes going in it is a 250 watt PSU and 17" monitor....

doesnt the UPS with AVR do the same thing though?
>>

Yes, but line conditioners are more specialized. APC makes decent UPS products, but their line conditioners aren't very good at all.

Im either going to go with the Back-UPS LS 700VA UPS or CyberPower's OfficePower? 700AVR

which would be better for me? i need something with AVR that will protect against power sags when the dryer or microwave comes on...

the CyberPower one taks more about the AVR, but APC also has the AVR, which has the better AVR, honestly...

I've heard that pretty much any of these commercial UPS' will not protect against a surge, they just don't have the capacity to do so. Furthermore, there's nothing in your house that can cause a surge sufficient to damage your computer. Buy a UPS for the "uninteruptable" part but don't think it'll protect against a lightening strike. Your best protection against that is a good ground system and whole house surge protector.

The absolute best AVR I have seen is on APC's OLD Back-UPS Pro's. I have 2 Back-UPS Pro 650's and they are correcting the voltage all the time. At the tightest setting (which is what I keep them at) it will keep the voltage between 106V and 127V. I don't think it could get much better than that. Surprisingly, that is slightly better than even the Smart-UPS line.

I don't know if the newer Back-UPS Pro USB line is as good as the old ones. APC's older products are built like a tank while their newer products seem quite crappy. For the BEST UPS with AVR I would get an old Back-UPS Pro (if you can afford it). Pretty much any good UPS will keep the voltage within acceptable limits for a computer (after all that is what they were designed for).
