I saw a sample .13u Tutalian p!!! on a website....it comes with 512K L2...the processor is said to oc from 1.13G to 1.47G with ease(air cooled)..
will tutalian beat athlon 4?

The larger 512K L2 cache Tualatins are for laptops only. The desktop versions will only have the normal 256K. Hopefully, Intel will change their minds and release a desktop version with the larger cache.

As far as overclocking. The Tualatin .13 coppers should be the next 300a. Some people think it will hit 1700mhz. Going to be very interesting.

Palomino (Athlon 4) will still beat it. Especially since the desktop Tutalian will only have 256K for cache. And current Thunderbird core Athlons are already going to 1.7 with air cooling. It has to been darned good air cooling, but some will get there.

Athlon 4's are out Intel's isn't.
Chip companies are always promising insainly high L2 caches and they ussualy cut them down

It would be nice if AMD puts 512K or more on chips based on the Thoroughbred core. It will also help them push more into the server markets.

false. desktop WILL get 512kb:

Servers and workstations:
Tualatin 512KB DP - 1,13 GHz model to be release by the end of June. 1.26GHz version shipment start in the beginning of July.
Intel Pentium III Xeon DP (different models for ServerWorks HE-SL, ServerWorks LE-3 chipsets with 1.10 - 1.15V core voltage, .13 micron, 512MB cache, 133MHz FSB) will appear in Q4'01;
Intel Xeon MP (with 1MB L3 cache for 8-way systems and with 512KB on-die L3 cache for 4-way systems; at 1.6GHz+) - Q1'02
64-bit solutions - Itanium/Intel 460GX (2MB/4MB L3 cache) should start to appear in Q1'01. McKinley/Intel 870 pilot run at the end of 2001, appearance in real systems - Q2/Q3'02. Prestonia/Plumas platform (NetBurst micro-architecture, DDR support, ECC, hot-plug PCI) scheduled for 2002: 2.20GHz CPU in Q1'02; 2.40GHz in Q2'02.
Later in Q3'02 Tualatin DP platform should be replaced with Northwood/Plumas LE.
Gallatin, targeted to replace Intel Xeon MP, should come in Q4'02.

Desktop:
transition to i850 based mPGA478 socket platforms prior to Northwood
Brookdale DDR platforms will appear in Q1'02
Tulloch based systems will appear in mid'02
Brookdale-G with integrated graphics as P4 platform for corporate market will appear in mid'02
815G/EG and 810E/E2 chipsets will support 0.13 micron Celeron CPUs in Q1'02 processors
Tualatin 256KB will be branded as a Pentium III
1.13GHz Pentium III (Tualatin) will be available in July (1.20GHz and 1.13GHz shipments to OEMs will start in June)
1.13GHz Pentium III (Coppermine) removed from the roadmap
Added 1.10GHz and 1GHz Pentium III with 100MHz FSB (available in June)
1.30GHz Pentium4 removed from the roadmap in Q3'01

<< Hmmmm that roadmap thing says 256k >>

That was what I was thinking. It does say 256k. We're talking desktops, not servers.

"Athlon 4's are out Intel's isn't."

Really? Where can I pick up a desktop A4 at? ;)

And swanny, it appears that the 1.7ghz Athlons are quite rare.

Well, the AthlonMP is available and it is effectively the same processor as the mobile Athlon4 besides the lack of PowerNow! functions. Of course the AthlonMP isnt meant for the average home system anyway.

just for the record, I would prefer a T-Bird based Athlon over a Tualatin.
Why?
Because I don't think the Tualatin will scale much beyond about 1.45GHz or so at most.
I'm willing to bet the T-bird is cheaper then the desktop Tualatin will be.
A further upgrade path with a decent Athlon mobo then with a mobo supporting the Tualatin. As far as I know intel doesnt intend to produce the Tualatin beyond 1.33GHz.
Also, I'd say the T-Bird is slightly faster overall then a Tualatin at equivalent clockspeeds.

As far as the digit-life.com roadmap, I don't put much faith in it. They could be right but judging by their past history their generally quick to post rumours.

Rand is right..the Athlon MP's are available. Also, the Athlon4 is available if you want to buy a notebook computer. There is also rumors that the new 1.4ghz Athlon are also a variant of the Palamino core...

If it were Athlon 4, it would run at a lower voltage. And again, I thought moron was asking about desktop cpu's.

The Tualatin "upgrade path" is starting to look rather interesting....according to VIA...the good'ol BX chipset is workable. :)

just wait and see, tualatin has not release yet, so we still dont know which is the best, the reason why people here say athlon4 because there are too many amd system user in this forum

You already said that, MustPost. How about a link of where a desktop cpu can be purchased?

I don't know if they can really deliver immediately, PC Progress does advertise several Athlon chip that they called Palomino. They are

<< AMD PALOMINO ATHLON 1.4GHZ, OEM .18M THUNDERBIRD, WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND ARSTHERMCPD, FOR THIS PROCESSOR THIS IS DUAL CAPABLE SERVER CHIP SOCKET A, 266MHZ FOR SERVERS >>

are these new p3's running at only 133fsb? will they also be available in 100mhz versions?

and what about socket type? still fcpga? would be nice if I could squeeze out another small cpu upgrade out of this old BX board :)

With the recent price drops you can get a decent P4 cheap...BUT the highest speed RAMBUS costs about 1/2 the price of the machine. Looks like Intel made a boo-boo.

Someone could get a Xeon with SDRAM to spare on pricewatch that would kick the P4's bootie....for less $.

Wait, how would the Tualatin beat the Athlon 4's? Is there any new technology? have they improved the FPU performance? As far as i know, the T-Birds are beating the P3's and P4's clock for clock, so if te Tualatin is just a P3 on a lower process fab and more L2 cache at the same latecny, how would it beat the Palamino's which are also lower process fab?

The only time I will be interested in a Tutalian is if they will work with BX boards and I want to upgrade my dual celeries on my Abit BP6.
