I've used both a fair amount. If youre familiar with photoshop, image ready is very good, plus photoshop is a better all-around graphics solution. If you havnt used PS before, Fireworks is easier to pick up and learn, and is geared more exclusively for web graphics. Also, fireworks is nice because it integrates with other macromedia software(dreamweaver, flash, etc) so you can edit graphics with fireworks within the other programs. I think fireworks is probably cheaper as well. All that being said, most graphic designers use only photoshop, plus there is more help on the web for photoshop and image ready....so it comes down to what you have used before and what you want to get out of it...theyre both professional quality programs and more than capable for all web based graphic needs... so hope this helps.
