Which one? (I have both)

I want this card to sit in my media center silently (I have the giant fanless heatsink on the 9800 right now) pumping out pixels to my 1280x720 projector.

Games are far from regular on this machine and the most taxing thing right now is City of Heroes.

Vista is a possability down the road.

Which would you choose and why?

6600GT for features. I'm not sure, but I believe performance is about the same, possibly skewed towards 6600GT>

The difference in performance (expect in d3 based titles) is negligable (i didn't notice it when i went from my 9800 pro to my 6600GT).

If you don't game much on it, I'd say it comes down to the silence factor, and my 6600GT stock fan was whiney as all hell...

I severely doubt that Vista needs SM3.0, so i would think you'd be fine with the 9800 for it, but regardless it's still a fair while until that issue becomes relevant, and i severly doubt you'll be doing any worthwhile gaming on Vista with either card 😉

Couldn't you just add a silencer or the like to the 6600GT?

i can't rly see if being worth his while if he already has a silent 9800 pro. The resale value on AGP 6600GTs here is still excellent, and as i've said above, the performance gains are generally negligable (in fact marginally slower in stuff like farcry with AA/AF turned up) excpet in d3 based games, he doesn't game much, and i don't think the Vista thing is rly relevant right now (9800 pro is full dx9 compliant anyway, and i doubt MS will set the bar to exclude all those 9800/9600s out there, worst case scenario you might miss out on some shiny effects, but as i've said, i doubt it).

oh he OWNS both!, take the 6600GT.. my friends fan continues to die while mine remains nice and alrihgt

its not exactly queit, but i odnt hear it over my case's noise

Ok, lets put it this way; is the 6600gt enough better than the 9800 to go to the effort of taking the heatsink off of the 9800 and putting it on the 6600? (its an aftermarket "Schooner." and will go on either.)

I thought it would. I suppose that would solve / answer the problem in a hurry. Now where are those directions... Or do you have a lnik showing compatability? (incompatability in this case.)
