Help me to decide (virgin overclocker)

Based on cost and final attainable processor speed what should I go with

Athlon 1700+ processor (JUIHB) = $50.00
Vantec Amd Aeroflow2 Copper Core Retail VA4-7245 = $31
Total price = $81 (overclockable to the 2.2 to 2.5GHz range)

OR

Sempron 2400+ (retail HSF) = $89.00
(overclockable to 11 x 200 = 2200MHz) (can I operate at this speed with the retail HSF and maintain acceptable temperatures)

Thanks for the Help

Prices are CDN
Motherboard = ABIT NF7-S v2.0
RAM = TwinMos 2x256 PC3200 Ram

That sempron is the SAME chip as 1700+, so you can directly compare MHz to MHz.

The 1700+ is more flexible if you get one that is unlocked. I'd go for the 1700+

Another vote for the 1700....BUT only assuming those are your only 2 choices.

Otherwise the mobile 2400 35-watter is a MUCH better choice. Would OC better, has 512k L2, and was only like $77 last time I checked Newegg.

Ya but it's way overpriced...:)

$50 vs $77

I mean 33% more money which will never equal 33% more performance....maybe 10 tops.

Yeah you got me on that one. I always love your price/performance numbers Zebo. Makes you realize how often people spend way too much for very marginal performance gains.

You might love em but my math was fubard. the Mobile is 50% more money than the Tbred or the Tbred is 33% less than the mobile.:p

An even worse p/p ratio!!! . Hey I'm cheap.:p

Yes with CPU's it's pretty amusing looking at charts, say, between even a non overclcoked A643000 and a FX-53/55 only to see, at max, 25% increase in performance while the Fx's cost 500% more money. Even more amusing, the performance gap shriks to almost nothing when overclocking.

Video card(s) are where it's at. I mean you spend $375 on a 6800GT/x800pro you get linear price/performance over a $120 9600pro or a $225 9800pro etc.
