Which of these three CRTs? [Poll]

Which of these monitors do you guys think I should get? In the long run I wanted to get an LCD but I can't do that (well I'm sure by december I could but you guys know it isn't wise to blow most of your cash at once) so I decided I will replace my 6 year old 17" Gateway2000 CRT with a new one. I can't really choose between these ones either.

The Viewsonic can be found for about $245 on Newegg (or around that price), the 957MB for $283 on Gateway2000's website, and the Sony for $229.35 on CDW. I found that shocking because that was $100 more roughly 4 months ago, but it doesn't say (to my knowledge) that it is refurbished. Is that a typo? The link to it is here. The non-black is $329, so i'm thinking maybe it is or something.

I also have had my eye on the NEC FE991SB-BK which is $258 on Newegg right now. Which do you think?

viewsonic hands down. Sony can be competetive if it uses Trinitron tube. I have a Dell rebranded Sony P991 with Trinitron tube. Even though it says made in Nov 1999, the picture is very clean and has deep color.

Its nice to see that this Viewsonic IS a good monitor 😀.
I was hoping that people had a favorable view of it because I would love to get a Viewsonic and the price sure is right.

I play a lot of games, read a lot of text and I also watch DVD movies from time to time. So this G90fb is the best? What if I could find the CPD-E440/B reasonably priced somewhere...would it be a better choice?

My monitor is a syncmaster 757mb and i love it. It's the best monitor if like me ( they say 1 in 100..lucky me :|
) you cant stand those 2 wires in apparture grill. The color is oustanding in game when you use the magicbright in entertainement mode... Text mode is perfect for those long homeworks hours.
So for Shadow mask monitor, choose no other ( i've tried LG Flatron and i prefer my syncmaster)

Well, the lines on Aperture Grille tubes doesn't bother me at all. However I am going to bet on not spending a huge amount of money on a CRT when I can buy one. I would like something great for my games, you know, and for those long hours of study, reading, or watching a DVD. I have a DVD player on an extremely nice surround setup around my TV but i'm not the only one that lives here and sometimes I have to watch them on my TV when both DVD players are taken up.

Can anyone explain the CDW price to me? I don't see why the black is $100 cheaper than the white (though i am getting black), and a buddy decided to look around and apparently he has seen the same thing at other places. It sounds too good to be true, though I would really like that monitor. However I have had my eye on the G90fb for a while, and it sounds like it is a very good monitor for the price. I have 2 shadowmasks here (one is the 6 year old Gateway2000 CrystalScan 700 and one is an NEC MultiSync 75) and they are both great but aren't flat-screen CRTs. I think that because I am still content with both that whichever way I go, I am sure I will get a great monitor. I find the 957MB online for around $283, so if that CPD-E440/B is truly that price then i'm going to have a tough choice choosing the 957MB (which was my initial choice).

Don't bother posting links to other threads, that is useless to me because I always search first and I didn't get what i wanted so I obviously posted. It just seems like there's always someone that posts with a bad attitude that complains that someone actually posted something that is similar to a previous topic (*GASP*! LoL). I know some of you have seen that.

They're all decent... I currently have a Samsung and couldn't be happier.. Viewsonic is also a great company... I don't know too much about Sony monitors... I am sure they're also good.. you have like the top 3 brands for monitors excluding like NEC and Mitsubishi maybe....

Actually my original choice was the NEC FE991SB but the occaisonal reports of fuzzy text was too much of a concern for me. You can't tell someone to go look at them in a store either, because you can't find them in stores anymore. CompUSA didn't have what I was looking for either.

I like NEC but even searching previous topics didn't yield conclusive results for me, it was about 50-50 for that monitor. However it does tend to be virtually unanimous for the three I put down here. I am leaning towards the Samsung 957MB even though it is more expensive than the G90f because it is rated #1 on PC World's list and others think highly of it. However, there is an issue of availability and my desire to have a Trinitron/DiamondTron so I might get the G90f anyways, or the FE991SB if I find something that provides conclusive results to allay my fears of fuzzy text. I do A LOT of reading on here besides gaming so crisp text is extremely crucial to me.

However you guys are right (or whoever it is that said that)...either way I am sure I can't go wrong. I would like to point out that it is practically a dead heat. I will continue searching for reviews and post for thoughts on other forums too.

Well, I really think you should pay the extra money and get a SyncMaster 957MB....really an awesome monitor, I love it( well my 757MB ). I work in a computer shop and if you live near Montreal(Canada) I will sure be happy to find you one.

I am thinking that I probably should pay the extra money for it because i'm sure it is good. Actually I have found plenty, and i'm not near Montreal...i'm near St. Paul, Minnesota, USA 🙂

Picking a monitor is very subjective. What one person thinks is a bright, crisp image might be dull and blurry to another. You have to go see the monitor for yourself. And don't be dupped by those stores that run the monitor in 800x600 with some aquarium screen saver. You want to evaluate the monitor in the mode that you are using it most. If you use MSWord all the time, then ask to see the monitor running a text based app. Good Luck.
BTW. My 9 year old 17" Nanao (Eizo) monitor is still hanging on, though the white is not as bright as it used to be. Since I paid $1200 for it, I guess I almost have gotten my money's worth. Geez prices have changed!

Yes but I already pointed out that you really can't do that anymore. In my area I could go to CompUSA, Best Buy, Circuit City or *maybe* even OfficeMax. Do they have good CRTs anymore? Nope. The best i've seen was a 17" Samsung MagicBright at BestBuy and it looked great, and a 17" Mitsubishi monitor (DiamondTron) and they both look great and i've asked similar questions and they refuse. If I want a monitor that will do what I want, I have already determined that I can't see it for myself unless some miracle happens. I would say my best bet is to check out systems at Circuit City because I found they have good ones there but even now they are increasingly LCD screens in the place of CRTs.

Edit: Thats why i've been asking for peoples' thoughts about these 19" screens or others on more than one forum so I can compare the yays and nays with reviews and then go with the one that people like the most, and currently the overwhelmingly positive one is the 957MB. It was rated highly on many sites, like #1 on PCWorld, and just about everyone I know that has one loves it. I personally don't care if I have a shadowmask or a trinitron, but a trinitron/diamondtron would be nice. I ruled out the FE991SB because 50% of the people asked had fuzzy text initially, and so did more than 3 reviewers.
In response to another post, I thought of the 900NF but there is a question of availability. I can't find it anywhere! Well maybe I could from a shady dealer, but i'm not sending $200-$310 to a site unless I know damn well that it is reputable. I am thinking of the 957MB, because I can find it on Gateway's website as well as Monitors Direct. I have dealt with Gateway over the years and i'm most likely to go that route because they have done well for us in the past. However, I would like that Sony CPD-E440 (Black) but it appears to still be $339, and i'm aiming for under $300 or $310 at the highest. I do know there are wonderful monitors in that range.
