Which of these programs can I 'end task'?

My dad, though I love him dearly, loves to put a lot of useless crap on our computer. Because of this, our system resources are constantly choked, and I installed a ton of extra RAM a few months ago to get us to 160 megs. With 160 megs of RAM, I opened Internet Explorer and AIM, and our system resources was down to less than 6%. :Q

If you press ctrl+alt+del at any time, you'd see that we have an OBSCENE amount of programs constantly running, so it's no wonder why this is the case. Normally I'd just say "end task" to everything but systray and explorer and go about my merry way when I was using the computer, but if I do that, for some reason odd things start happening; eg. I can't connect to the internet, the volume buttons on the keyboard type a V instead of changing the volume, etc.

So my question is, which from the following list can I "kill" (end task on) and still lose no functionality of internet, sound cards, whatever. Some of it's obvious (winampa) but I'll just give the whole list, and y'all can tell me what to ctrl alt del end task on everytime it's my turn to use the computer:

The following list is what's listed at start-up:

WinFax MOD-US Robotics 56K Fax Win Int
Explorer
Gmt
Gwhotkey
Acrord32 (often 'not responding' for some reason)
Wfxctl32
Winmgmt
Findfast
Cmesys
Hpppt
Mediadet
Poproxy
Loadqm
Rundll32
Cnotify
Navapw32
Point32
3cmlnkw
Mswheel
Systray
Csinject
Winampa
Ahqtb
Creative Launcher
NewsUpd
Hotsync
Msmsgs
Ctlauncher

Phew!

Thanks guys. 🙂

Holy crap!! That is way too much to startup. You can safely end task on everything except for Explorer and Systray. You may also want to check all of the programs that load at boot up and see if you can turn off the autostart options (usually something like a checkbox that says "Load at Startup". You can also use msconfig (if you aren't using Win2k), and the startup tab there. Uncheck things you don't want to load at startup.

Well see, kinda half my question is: what are these programs? I can't disable them if I don't know what they are. Besides, who knows if my dad wants them running, he paid for this computer after all. I'd just like to kill em while I use it, and then he can restart and have everything going he wants.

HOLY COW!!!!!!!! seriously dude, start junking that stuff, you should be able to cut 2-3 minutes off boot up time

That's why I'm posting this...but you didn't answer my questionnnn....[/whine]

johnjohn, what i did was just do a google search for each individual program and found out what it was. i found all of them and got rid of the ones i didn't need.

Cmesys is said to be Gator (spyware). Get rid of it with Ad-aware

Poproxy-NAV program that scans email before it reaches email client

GWHotkey.exe
Software that sets up the Gateway AnyKey keyboard shortcuts (a series of buttons that allow one-click access to e-mail, browser, volume and CD/DVD controls, etc). ???

Explorer - duh.
Gmt - dunno
Gwhotkey - some macro program? ditch it.
Acrord32 (often 'not responding' for some reason) - Adobe Acrobat Reader
Wfxctl32 - dunno
Winmgmt
Findfast - Microsoft Office junk. Ditch it. Disable it in startup.
Cmesys - Spamware?
Hpppt
Mediadet
Poproxy
Loadqm
Rundll32 - need it
Cnotify - auto-updater program
Navapw32 - Norton Antivirus
Point32 - dunno. ditch it.
3cmlnkw - 3com Driver.
Mswheel - Microsoft Mouse software
Systray - need it
Csinject - Norton Antivirus
Winampa
Ahqtb
Creative Launcher - Creative's sound card drivers
NewsUpd
Hotsync - PalmOS
Msmsgs
Ctlauncher - Creative Labs App launcher. Ditch it.

ahqtb - Audio HeadQuarters for SoundBlaster Live! sound cards !! In layman terms : System Tray application installed with the drivers for Creative Labsâ?? SoundBlaster Live! sound cards and which enables you to bring up that utility from the System Tray.

Point32 may be for the MS mouse

if you can find a program called RegCleaner (freeware), it lets you select startup files from the registry to delete.

If you have win 98, i know this works for sure..... go to start --> run --> type in "msconfig" (without the quotes of course) --> A window pops up, click on the startup tab on that window and then you will see all these programs with checkboxes next to them and you can just uncheck the ones you don't want to start and then click apply.

zimmie is right. only id add one more: taskmon

I never saw it specified, however based upon your post he is running 95/98/Me which means that everything on that list can be killed except for explorer (litterally everything).
I know this has been said above throughout various posts but I thought I would clairify to keep things simple.

First remove everything you can from the start menu as tweakmm suggested.

Second go start>run "msconfig" and go to the "startup" tab on the far right. Remove everything you can from there just like zimmie6576 suggested.

After doing those 2 things and rebooting there should only be a few things listed when you do a "ctrl+alt+delete" (the things that you didnt remove, plus explorer, plus systray)

If you still want to kill processes to save memory than you can go in and end task on everything exept for explorer and your computer will still run fine (there might be a program or 2 that requires something to be running, but esentially everything will work)

Hope that Helps
