Which of these cable modems do you recommend for use with Cox High Speed Internet?

ive always had good luck with Motorola SB51XX modems...tbh, the best cable modem is the one that works. you may even want to look into rented modems from Cox...a lot of times it makes sense from a support, price, and RMA perspective.

you dont want a modem/router/wireless combo, so this would have nothing to do with the "coverage" in your condo. look for a separate device to provide this functionality; LOTS of posts about router selection, just search.

Are all combo wireless access points / cable modems bad?

I am doing research for my sister, who is not very tech savvy and just wants something that is basically plug and play and reliable.

Then have her rent the modem/router/wireless combo from the provider. That way if she has trouble she can just call them and it's their problem. All it will take is one headache problem for it to all be worthwhile.

Is there an intrinsic design flaw to all combo wireless routers / cable modems, or is it more of a specific product issue?

I don't mind trouble shooting for my sister, but I think she would prefer single combo unit because it is visually less clutter.

So far:

option 1: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER (mainly based upon good customer reviews at Amazon)

option 2: Motorola SB5100 and Apple Airport Extreme (not sure what is latest and greatest, or best, in the SB51xx series)

I haven't done much research on the other cable modems on the Cox approved list (http://support.cox.com/sdccommon/as...sprt_cid=f3c8a618-6be2-4859-b7db-6152e87bd537), but did preliminary research based upon Motorola SBxx recommendation above.

The design flaw of the all in one box is that it doesn't do any aspect of it great but they do it "good enough". My provider actually gave me a router/wireless combo for free and the modem is rented from them.

Thank you for your input!

Is there any particular cable modem, or combo modem / wireless router from the Cox approved list above that stands out above everything else?

A DOCSIS 3.0 modem, such as the Motorola SB6120 would be the better choice.
There is a wireless Motorola cable modem (SBG901) available; but by using that, you'd lose the extra security provided by a router.

If by "extra security" you are referring to a built in firewall, I would think that the SBG901 has that. I had its predecessor, the SBG900, and it had a built in firewall as part of the router component (and although I'm not a firewall expert it appeared rudimentary and more troublesome than other router firewalls). Having said that, I definitely would not recommend the router portion of the SBG900 as the speed performance was horrible. I ended up disabling the router functionality and used the SBG900 modem portion connected to a Linksys router and that worked well. Ultimately I replaced it with the SB6120 connected to the Linksys router.
