Intend to get a barebone IBM laptop and am looking at various HDD's.

I'd go with Hitachi. You can use their power savings application which typically adds about 15-30 minutes of battery life to your system! Toshiba has no such feature.

 
There are reviews compare Hitachi & Toshiba 40G 5400rpm 2.5" HD. Hitachi performs better than Toshiba even with only half of the cache memory. Probably because Toshiba firmware is not optimized. If this happened on 7200rpm model, then Hitachi still keeps the crown.
