Which Nvidia card should I get?

I'm going to be building a new system geared towards cad and 3D modeling. I will be using an Asus P4c800 Deluxe motherboard. I would like to use an Nvidia card.

My question is this. Which Nvidia card should I get that will support 3D solids and surfaces the best? I'm willing to spend up to $350. I was leaning towards an Nvidia Geforce4 Ti 4800 which has the AGP 8X (the mother board I'm getting has an AGP 8X slot)

Any replies will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The Quadros are their 3D modeling oriented cards. You should check around in forums for the software that you plan on running, like Maya or 3DSX, to see what real CAD artists have to say. Mostly gamers around here, ya know?

Before the fanboys start: The ATI line is FireGL.

Which apps are you going to be using? For some applications an older Quadro may be better then their consumer line, some of them may pair up with a GF4 just fine while others are likely better off with a FX(parts of its odd architecture actually has the potential to be quite superior in 3DViz apps over the competition).

Isn't there some hardware mod that can be done to transform a geforce into a Quadro? Or was that way back in the days of Geforce 256 still?

Thanks to all of you who replied. I took DefRefs advise and looked at some other forums. I decided to go with the Geforce FX5900 with 256MB.

Thanks again

Actually I believe it was a software mod.

the fx5900 would be a poor choice. no one recomended that to you did they?

kal, if you're not going to be gaming, wouldn't a 5200 suit you fine? I didn't realize you'd see that great a productivity gain from a 256MB, 450MHz card.

What kind of retard recommending him a 5900?

Knew it wouldn't take to long to get an ATI fanboy response.
