Which NIC? Intel or 3Com?

The difference AWA price is marginal.
I have had problems with 3com 905 into a Intel 410 Switch/Hub
Sooo consider what your plugging it inot as well.

<< both of them are of very good quality. >>

exactly - can't go wrong either way... price should be next concern...

Personally, I've had good luck with 3Coms

Nycxandy- please remember that there may well be a problem with netgears and Athlon systems

i've had an entire office of 3com 3C905Bs give me problems... had to update the drivers like every month so that it would let windows boot... it was a pain in the butt... i would go intel but in reality i would just get a cheap smc, netgear, or linksys... they work nearly as well, i haven't had any probs w/ them and u can't beat the prices... if one fails take the money u saved and get another...

my thoughts

Same problem here with a 3Com 3C905B. Worked fine with my Intel BX mobos, started having troubles when I got my first Via based mobo. Swapped it out for an Intel and I never looked back and yes, the Intels work fine with AMD.

bozo1: do the 3C905B's have a problem with VIA chipsets? i have a 3C905C-TX...does anyone know if they're part of the same family and would cause the same trouble as the B?

flipdon - I don't know. I had problem with multiple 3C905's when building my first VIA motherboard. Tried a different brand board and had the same problem. Basically, the card wouldn't talk on the network unless I softbooted 5-6 times and then only for about 10 minutes or so. I chalked it up to a compatibility problem.
