which network protocols for firewalled lan to share files between the two

I just got a barricade broadband router and I only have TCP/IP installed on both machines and the file transfers between the two leave much to be desires (it was telling me it would take 3 mins to copy 100MB) granted one of the machines only has a 10mb network card it should NOT take 3mins so I'm just curious what other network protocols I might need to make it more efficient perhaps netbeui? Any help is appreciated!
