I've got both an Intel Pro/100 and a D-Link 538 10/100 network cards just sitting on my desk and I'm trying to deside which one to put in. The 538 has wake on line the intel doesn't (Not that I see the use in that). Which one uses less CPU usage?

well, if i was stranded on a desert island...i'd prolly take the Intel NIC with me. D-link (as far as i'm concerned) makes NICs that work , but i've certainly never been impressed with them. nothing special. so from my perspective, i'd say go INTEL. as far as CPU usage, i highly doubt there's a noticeable difference of any kind between two similar NICs.

From my experience the Intel would probably have the lower CPU usage, BUT this means nothing really since the CPU usage is so close in both cases. I would go with Intel though. Your not looking at a performance gain, more at reliability(under stresses) and the fact your buying the INTEL name.(Intel isnt just gonna hack together some nic and place their name on it) (not that dlink would either) :)

Would there be any problem using an intel pro 100 nic in an AMD system? Doubting there would be, but wondering anyway.

No way of telling without real world benchmarks. Buy both, test them both, and see which works better for you. Return the loser.

Return the loser :) good one.

I'm using the intel right now in an AMD system. D-Link is the chose of perferences for the workstations where I work, but all the servers have intel pro 100 in them, so I'm guessing intel is the best ones.

I guess they made a deal with D-Link to get them cheep or something. All there hubs are D-Link's to.
