which mp3 player to buy?

I had an ipod and it was great. Got stolen And now i'm looking to buy
another player. Are there any as good but less expensive?

My first recommendation would be a Creative Vision:M. 30GB for less than $300 (I think it goes for $280??).

Do you need more than 5gb of space for music? If you don't need more than, say, 4GB, your options open up to include flash players and micro-sized players like the Zen Micro or the Sansa e2x0 series.

Oh, a few good review sites are:

DAP Review tends to focus on eccentric foreign players, but they occasionally have some applicable stuff. Anythingbutipod doesn't have many articles, but they seem a little more friendly. But whatever.

Amazon has the Creative Zen Sleek Photo 20GB for $159.99AR right now.

I really like my Creative Zen Micro Photo. I'm selling my Creative Zen NX 30GB (see sig) and it's in perfect working condition. The firmware on it doesn't support WMA, though, if you need that.

The Sandisk is what I'm looking at getting. I want one of the models that use AAA batteries and not the rechargeable types. I also don't need the SD card. Just haven't figured out what size I need.

good sound quality is a relative term. it has the worst sound quality of almost any mp3 player which isn't to say it's unbearable, but if you care about things like that...

which is too bad, it's the player i would have gotten otherwise. creative, iriver, iaudio, ipod all have better sound quality.

It is a relative term, in general. I've never critically listened to anything but a Creative player, so I can't give any real experience tips. I did do some reading and found that it has some noise at low volume.

iRivers can be rockboxed but there's not really an option for OP - H10s basically suck, and the older iRivers lose to the newer players out today. Maybe the iRiver Clix is good, but it's a pretty penny.

Yep if he doesn't care about video or a big multi color screen, there are a few 4gb flash players that are decent. the zen micro being one of the better ones.

I would recommend against a Gigabeat S and would recommend a Vision:M over it. Now, this is based on someone else's review, as I've had no experience with the Gigabeat S, but anythingbutipod.com has some pretty negative comments about it that make it a dealbreaker. Vision:M has far fewer Cons, and is a better player overall, IMO.
