Right now it's between a Sony MD player with NetMD, an Apple iPod 2nd Gen (refurb 10GB for $169) or a new iPod.

EDIT: Added the Nomad Zen 20GB version too.

Ooh...I voted for the refurb. It's all tied up with one vote for everything (including results), LOL. :D

Well I'm results, because I'm not sure which one is the best, and want to make a good choice here.

I voted new expensive iPod because I couldn't live without the ability to make on the fly playlists which you can't do with the 2nd gen's. I'm assuming that's what the refurb is anyway. Either way, get an iPod though :)

Put all my songs on there at once, as well as having a portable drive. Plus the rechargable battery pays for itself after several years. Batteries are expensive!

I just got the Nomad Zen NX (30GB). Its a great MP3 player. Where does it lack when compared to the iPod? Biggest is size. Its slightly larger, and for me I would love something that fit better into my pocket. Next is the LCD is nowhere near as good as the iPod.

It excells in the fact that it has better sound output than the iPod. Its costs a lot less per GB. It has a replaceable lithium battery, which I used for a 5 hour drive, a few hours in a camper, and then 4 hours on the way home, and still had battery power to spare.

Hey, I'm thinking of purchasing an ZenNX soon...do you know of any sites that have pics of it next to an iPod? Or even next to the original Zen? The price and WMA support are more important to me if it's a reasonable size.

The NetMD will come with a rechargable battery, so an ipod won't save you any money there. But I own a MD and am about to buy a hard drive mp3 player, so I'd say go ipod, if that's what you like.

Before you buy anything though, have a look at the ipod clones. I don't think much of the Phillips hdd-100 - the UI was quite slow to react and it didn't have a radio, and the creative zen's are a bit big...

The Iriver ihp-100 looks decent - great battery life, small size and radio remote. But I think i'll wait till next month, when the ihp-200 comes out, at supposedly about the same price, with a 20gb hard disk.

new ipod ... i've had every generation of iPod, and though pouring money into each new generation has not been fun, I can honestly say I like the newest one enough to justify the price.

you can get a 30gb for about $390 i think

Think about the Zen NX I guess.

BTW, yes a CD player is a lot cheaper... but I found for myself that the 20 gig ipod was worth $300. I use it often and switch albums often, so it's good ot have them all in one place.

NX --> Zen --> iPod

Not a great pic, because the NX is actually smaller than the original zen. Picture doesn't do it justice. NX review

Are you hearing those "GermyBoy" voices in your head again?

It didn't hold up in court last time, and you did 3 months in jail. Don't be stupid.
