Which MP3 player brand says "reliability" to you?

Probably going to pick up a new MP3 player to replace my hard locking RCA brick player in the next few months. I was curious about which brand of MP3 player has the most solid construction. My RCA was actually pretty well built (lyra 40gb and it is HUGE). I accidentally dropped it when i tripped the other day and it fell over the edge of a concrete embankment i was on (about a 4 foot drop) and hit the cement below. My headphones had rather long cords on them that i had bundled together and it did not severe the connection, the player did not even skip when it impacted, i picked it up and there was not a scratch on it. Even though it was physically built well, its software and firmware sucks badly. It locks up all the time (ever since i bought it). What i am looking for is a brand of MP3 players that has both solid physical construction and does not lock up. I also want something much smaller than the brick i have now.


What i want:
1. Solid physical construction (feels well built and is sturdy)
2. Does not lock up
3. Small
4. 40GB +

Which brand provides we with all of these?
 
my dell dj felt solid and well built. plus the finish isn't scratch prone like an iPod. i've had it for a long time without a case and it still looks new.

I have used my cousin's Zen 40gb (he bought it a couple of months ago). While it is lighter than my RCA, it is still about the same size. Was looking for something a bit smaller than that, plus, he has already had to RMA it in that small of a time period.

i dont' know if i'd call the iPod having the best build quality. i think you'd have to factor in how scratch prone it is. i guess it depends on what Schadenfroh is looking for...

The Zen Xtra jukebox I had was pretty solid I guess, but the front panel would never stay on. I eventually got rid of it.

The scratches will not be an issue, i rarely take my MP3 players out of their carrying cases / belt clip attachments.

Thanks, doing research into that right now and comparing it to the ipod photo, that thing looks sweet! Has it ever locked up on you?

Nope. No lockups. Had it for a couple months.

It does have some other drawbacks though, which could all be fixed in firmware/software updates if Toshiba would get off their asses. The Room software is pretty crappy and unintuitive, but once you get the hang of it, it's routine to load music on.
I'd be happy if they just updated the driver/firmware so you could just use WMP at full USB2 speed and transfer album art. It would be perfect after that, IMO.
 
well, the Creative Zen series has only a 90 DAY warranty. Anyone who buys one of those should have a cat scan immediately. Get something with a year. I don't know who actually manufactures these things....they're probably all done at some ECM in China.

My Zen NX has lasted me 3 years, now. I would say the build quality is excellent. If the battery dies, it can be replaced for ~$15, and it was meant to be replaced, unlike the iPods.

No kidding! They could make a fortune off of us bikers (pedal powered). If I can load one up that will last me on a 3-day ride, I would be all over it.

Because they're built well. I take my Creative Zen Touch with me BMXing and it still works. No skips or lockups.
