Gone With The Wind should be #1, it's still up there in the ranking, and when it was in theaters, tickets were like .50 (hell, maybe less)

I personally liked 2 scenes... The naked chick one, and the Leo dies one (almost got my arse kicked 'cause I was barely able to hold in the laughter).

I don't think there were a LOT of people who liked titanic; it's just that there were about 20 people who each saw it 5 times a day for 2 years straight...

But if you want to be really fair, you have to adjust it's earnings back down because if you wanted to see it back then, it HAD to be in theatres. You couldn't wait for it to come out on video because there was no video (VCR/DVD). So, if you wanted to see it, you saw it in the theatres.

I guess you could just add the rental/purchase earnings of the other movies in to their box office scores, and then adjust that back down for the population increase, then take into effect for the differences in the economy (more disposable income = more movie watchings), and then....

Yada yada yada yada... Titanic has the largest box office earnings, plain and simple.

That's so true. I'll bet the average teenage girl saw the movie 3.4 times.

Rentals have NOTHING to do with box office earnings. :)

As for Titanic...I thought it was a good movie. Most people I know who hated it are macho guys with no interest in the love story or they hate it because most of their friends did. :)

no, it is gone with the wind, because all we're calculating here is box office (at a movie theater), not rentals, and you MUST include inflation. otherwise, that's like saying "wow, stuff was incredibly cheap 100 years ago, a steak cost $.05!" or some other nonsense. box office record is really a poor way to measure popularity of a movie, because of examples like titanic where people (ok, 13 year old girls ;)) would see it every day for a year. i would rather find out what movie has been seen by most people.

Actually, it's a fine way to measure the popularity of a film. Does anyone here know anyone who actually saw Titanic 3 or 4 times in the theaters? I sure don't.

But if you're not satisifed with that measure it's popularity or quality of film, would it winning 11 Oscars help? :)

What he's trying to say is that because we have the option of waiting to see a movie on video cassette/DVD, we may choose not to see it in the theater. I'm sure that has a pretty big influence on box office earnings for a number of movies, thought I'm not sure how much impact it would have on a "must see" type movie like Star Wars or Spiderman. I think that's digging too deep. Adjusting for inflation seems adequate enough in my book.

Titanic wasn't too bad. I thought the ending was uber cheesy though. Everyone else that was dead in the ocean was frozen into a rictus, with clawed hands and gaping mouth. Leo just sort of drifted peacefully into the deep.

Yeah, I just now remembered inflation... there should be a counter-inflation list made up. Ben Hur is missing too. :)

Try looking at the worldwide box office numbers, and you'll see Titanic will hold the record for a good long time.

Rentals have NOTHING to do with box office earnings.

Sure they do. If you couldn't ever rent any movies, I'm sure you'd be seeing a lot more in theatres, thus driving up the box office takings for every movie.

I doubt that it has much of an impact. If people really wanted to see a movie, they'd see it in theaters regardless of whether or not it came out on DVD or VHS.

Also, before DVD or VHS came around, there were probably a lot less movies coming out so there were less movies to see anyway.
