the local bikestore tells me the Giant Rincon is a good beginner bike. Should I get that or the Specialized Sport. My budget is around 300.

Actually you should test ride them both to see which one you like.

I've got a rincon, it fits my needs quite well. My suggestion is try different bikes and see what you like. I had my heart set on a Trek but after trying a few, the giant frame was more agile IMO.
