Which Motherboard?

Hi,

I've decided to build my own gameing computer, and a friend of mine directed me to this forum since.
Anyways, you'll probably see my posts on what to buy and stuff.

Now, I decided to start with the mobo since I would think it's the most logical place to start.

Currently, I'm thinking of a MSI K7N2 Delta-L mother board. It looks versatile since it supports ddr ram at 266, 333 and 400. Also, i'm not big on cash so the AMD chip will probably come in handy.

Is this a good motherboard, right now the price for me is $155 (ca). O, it also has NForce 2 which I heard was good.
Any input is good.

Thanks.

Great choice on the chipset, but I woould stay away from MSI, not bad boards, but I've heard horror stories about the support. Asus A7N8X deluxe or the Abit NF7-S are the best Nforce 2 boards IMO.

Do you mean bad support as in hardware or if you need help installing and problems etc...? And o, is there a cheaper board. I heard nforce was good, but I probably will be using an ati vid card, will that conflict with anything? Also, how good is the nforce?

Thanks.

Since you're in Canada, may I suggest this... check out this promo link from NCIX

NCIX promo specials

they have the Soltek SL-75FRN2-L for $129 ... yes, that is canadian... i got mine shipped here to Ontario for $155 after tax, shipping and even shipping insurance... there is no possible way to beat this deal, i highly suggest you check this out. 😀

The NF2 mobos are definately the best price/performance option available. I've build several systems using Asus and Aopen NF2 boards. I've also recently build an MSI Granite Bay (GNB Max) based P4 system as well as a Soyo based system. I would agree with a previous post that MSI is not the board to use for the novice, simply based upon support. The Aopen was probably the classiest and most trouble free install that I have ever done. Drivers and bios are great right out of the box and the documentation is flawless. My suggestion is to buy an AK79G Max and use the onboard graphics till you decide that it isn't enough. The on board graphic chip is a 440MX I believe. However, because of the integration, it responds more upscale. The board sells for $139 through Newegg. I would couple that with an AMD XP 1700 for $47 and add 2x256 PC2100 cheap memory for around 2x$43 (http://www.pcboost.com/store/memory.asp). Total cost = $272. Later, when you decide to upgrade, the sky is the limit. Even though the Bartons are out, AMD will go to a 400mhz FSB this month. At any point after you could upgrade the board by swapping out the CPU (Athlon XP 3200/400), memory (2x256 Corsair XMS), and disable the on board graphics for an ATI 9800 Pro. Anything in between is possible.

Yeah, MSI boards have horrible support and I'll even go so far as to say their previous boards had iffy quality. My MSI-6330 lite had so many problems, I wasnt sure whether to be pissed off or happy when it finally died this year.
