Good Day;

I7-6700K is either out of stock or ridiculously higher than retail price. So am thinking going 5th generation, hence, the proposed build:

CPU: I7-5930K
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i GTX
RAM: Still not decided
VGA: 2xGTX 780
PSU: Seasonic X-series1200
Monitor: ACER X34

Which Motherboard to choose:
-ASUS X99-E WS/USB 3.1
-ASUS X99 Rampage V Extreme/USB 3.1

I want a future proof motherboard that can take on anything.

Regards;

I have the Rampage V extreme board, and while it is nice, it's very finicky with BIOS / overclocking settings. I also had 1 of the RAM sticks "disappear" on m. After a few reboots and resetting the BIOS it appeared again. The WS board looks nice but only if you really need all of those PCIE lanes. Also, be prepared for long POST times with these fully featured boards.

Would you be open to also looking at MSI? Some of their boards look good and seem to get good reviews (Mpower, x99S SLI, Krait)

When searching for the top X99 motherboards these were there. Rampage V Extreme is a well known model. The feature of ASUS X99-E WS seemed intriguing. I am never thinking of doing a quad SLI but I might change my mind.

In that top list three brands kept repeating: ASUS, ASROCK and MSI. I never had a good experience with MSI so I wish to avoid.

I am using an X99 Deluxe in my X99 rig and I can say don't buy it. It has been finicky from day one. Same issues that dmoney1980 saw, actually.

My recommendation at this point is the ASUS X99-A. It's fairly no-frills but it looks like it will get the job done. And, unlike with my X99 Deluxe, I don't see tons of reviews complaining of issues.

I second that! Sad part is that I had the Asus x99-a board before this one. Ran super stable with a mild OC and no weird issues. I got the ROG board for a killer price and thought I'd get more OC headroom out of it, and instead got more headaches.

Ugh, that's a serious bummer.

The board that will replace my X99 board sometime in 2017 will be whatever ASUS "WS" board is available for Skylake-E. These boards aren't as flashy as the Delxue or the ROG boards, but they are damn solid. I remember my P7P55-WS Supercomputer was a champion.

1. 5820K unless you plan on running Tri-SLI. I'd only recommend X99 if you plan on overclocking.

2. I'd also sell 780s and get a single 980Ti, add the $ saved from downgrading from 5930K to 5820K.

3. For the board, I'd go ASRock X99 Extreme4/3.1 for $225 or ASUS X99-A/USB 3.1 for $250.

4. For RAM, my #1 pick is:
ADATA 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 CL16-16-16 = $100

or this for $90.
